claire rousay presents a little death

claire rousay’s music cascades from a well of documented experience, reflections of the past that compose the present. A prolific multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer, rousay gracefully crafts boundaryless music. From her frequent and acclaimed collaborations to her film scoring, from her own compositions to her solo pop work, rousay’s music is delicate yet powerful, carefully constructed with a casual intimacy. rousay collages a wealth of found sounds and field recordings with earthy strings, stately piano, and processed instrumentation, all of which trace the outlines of memories and distinct impressions and create a complex constellation of feeling. a little death illustrates rousay’s ability to sculpt sonic microcosms from disparate raw materials, worlds where sound and feeling are one in the same. Shaped around field recordings she captured at dusk, the album is an homage to the gentle drifts and lurking disquiet of twilight.

Mary Lattimore with the Tara Clerkin Trio

Mary Lattimore’s music exists somewhere far above us. The angelic tones emanating from her Lyon & Healy harp, often looped live through a Line 6 DL4 pedal, are at once distinct and eternally familiar. Once you start an album it’s hard to turn off. Blending her classical background with the experimental spirit of indie rock, Mary has collaborated with a slew of producers and artists to bring the harp into the modern landscape.

Second Sundays | Hop City Hellcats

Randy Miritello formed Hop City Hellcats to explore more avenues of expression.  Being a little more “electric”, Hop City became another voice with which to write. Once described as “half-way between classic Cash and Dwight Yoakum “in style, most comfortable with an acoustic guitar in hand but, having a different array of backing instrumentation to play with, his songwriting opened up to more styles.

Writing with Mermer Blakeslee

This popular longstanding workshop is returning this year though just with one series (rather than two). Stay tuned for dates to be announced soon!

Bring a piece to read that you are working on, up to 6 or 8 pages. We’ll listen as a group and respond with honesty, engagement, and respect. We’ll discuss elements of fiction— voice, character, point of view, plot, imagery— as well as different processes that help bring a story forth.  The singularity of each voice will be encouraged. Our approach will be humble but our purpose will be grand: to give voice to the clarity and energy of the imagination.

Mermer Blakeslee has published three novels. In Dark Water (Ballantine) was selected by Barnes and Noble for its Discover Great New Writers series. An excerpt from her latest novel, When You Live by a River, won the Narrative Prize. Blakeslee received three fiction fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts.  Drawing on her work with fearful ski students, she wrote the non-fiction A Conversation with Fear. Her roots are in poetry and her current project circles back to a hybrid of that form. She was born, raised, and still lives in New York’s Catskill Mountains. For more info, go to www.mermerblakeslee.com

WKC 50th Anniversary Celebration

Community celebration of 50 years bring art, love and music to this Valley.

Music brought to us by the Big Takeover!
Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born singer and songwriter Nee Nee Rushie, the seven-piece New York band The Big Takeover plays original music that is rooted in and reverent toward the genres and rhythms of Jamaican pop: reggae, rocksteady, ska. Their deceptively complex arrangements and big hooks connect with the spirit of Motown and the uptown sophistication of the 21st century retro soul and R&B revival scene.

Helen Rose - Air Cool Jenny | Second Sundays

Air-Cool Jenny is composed of Helen Rose and Kramer Sanguinetti. It was the trick of a warm late summer’s eve in New York City that Kramer and Helen first played music together well into the wee hours of the morning. They lived in the great city of New Orleans, and found joy frolicking with the creative spirits of the swamp. Presently, they reside in the bucolic Catskill Mountains of New York.

Helen's dynamic and powerful voice mixed with Kramer's golden-toned tenor creates an incomparable blend conveying heartfelt emotions to philosophical musings. Their harmonies reflect their shared experience -- finding truth in song as young human beings. As adults they share the universal language of music deeply. Inspired by Appalachian folk music, blues, country, jazz and funk, Air-Cool Jenny has an extraordinary sound of its own. Songs composed by this duo explore the wonders of the world through deep reflection and poetry born from real life events. Their latest EP, which was recorded in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana with members of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, will be released in April 2021.

La Muchacha y el Propio Junte

When her solo project La Muchacha began to take form, Ramírez looked inward for clues to the sound she sought to create. She realized she was angry. “I would ask myself, ‘Why do so many things bother me? Why does the news bother me so much?’”

Isabel will be joined on our stage by a full band, we are looking forward to hear what she will be bringing us.
