Wet Plate Tintype Photo w. Kevin Q. Gray

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the process of 19th century wet plate photography, specifically tintypes or photographs printed on metal. Instructor Kevin Q. Gray will discuss cameras, chemicals, and supplies, and each student will have an opportunity to make at least one tintype photo of their very own. 

Students should wear clothes they don’t mind getting permanent stains on, and should bring safety glasses if possible. Students can also bring antique film cameras such as Brownie box cameras if they wish to try to use their own cameras to make a tintype (not required). In addition, please bring lunch/snacks for the day.

Kevin Q. Gray is a photographer and educator living in Cherry Valley, NY. He is Manager of Arts Education at Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown and teaches photography as an adjunct professor at Hartwick College. For the past twenty years he has worked in traditional, digital, and historic photographic processes.

Due to the small class size for in-person workshops, each participant makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and canceling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
Cancellations must be made at least 30 days prior to the start date of a workshop in order to receive a refund. Registration and material costs (if applicable) will be refunded, minus a non-refundable $25.00 registration fee. Although extremely rare, we reserve the right to cancel any class up to 48 hours beforehand for a full refund.
