Bette Alexander “Recent Paintings”
In the Roberts Gallery, West Kortright Centre
“Perhaps my pictures show how monotonous life would be if we only cared for what is great in the world and not about everything local and particular that actually makes life rich. Recently I have been painting people dancing. This series was inspired by a dance/beer hall, called Rainbow Gardens, not too far from my summer studio in rural upstate New York. I used to go dancing there and loved it. I use oil sticks and oil paints to portray my subjects. I enjoy the vibrant colors and easy directness of these mediums, and the way I can use tools and even my fingers to articulate the surfaces. Heavy texture has always fascinated me. I like to dig in and really develop and shape my surfaces."
Alexander’s work has been used on book jackets for Mayim Hafuchin (Water Inside Out) by Basmat Hazan -published in Israel, and You Never Know, by Robert Newman. Her painting “Where Has My Life Gone" is in the Spring issue of the Buddhist publication Inquiring Mind. She was in the Catskill Mountain Guide “Artist Feature Section”. Her work was included in recent shows at the Interfaith Church Center, NYC, Longview Museum of Fine Art, Texas, and Belskie Museum of Art, New Jersey. Alexander has won numerous awards at the Cooperstown National Art Shows.
Bette Alexander lives and works in Manhattan, and also maintains a home/studio in rural upstate New York near Delhi. She has two children and two grandchildren. She has been painting since age 16, when she saw El Greco's "View of Toledo," and realized that painting was her life's work.
