Ethel

The new classical music

Ethel

"Ethel...plays their repertoire vigorously and cultivates a persona closer to (that) of a rock band than of a conventional string quartet" - Alan Kozinn, New York Times.

"Remember in Charlie Daniels' 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' how, to be honest, the Devil's fiddle sounded a lot cooler than his opponents'? Well, Ethel is that devil" - Kimberly Massengil, Murphguide.

Ethel, a Juilliard-trained, all-star, unconventional string quartet, stretches far beyond the limits of genre and style to embrace a music that arises from the context of our time. Since their arrival on the music scene in 1998, they have brought an exciting, beautiful and rare combination of tastes and talents, drawing on each member's unique experience in the music world. Members of Ethel have performed and recorded with Bang on a Can, CONTINUUM, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the New York Chamber Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Steve Reich Ensemble, and with artists Sheryl Crow, Roger Daltrey, Reba McEntire, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.

Ralph Farris (viola), a Grammy-nominated arranger, is an original member of the Broadway company of Disney's The Lion King, and former Musical Director for Roger Daltrey of The Who. He has collaborated with Allen Ginsberg, Joseph Silverstein, and pop sensation Dishwalla.

Dorothy Lawson (cello) is the solo cello voice for Brazilian jazz pianist Marcelo Zarvos & Group. She has toured extensively with Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A founder of the Rossetti and Roerich String Quartets, her Koch label recording of Borodin's Cello Sonata is a North American premiere.

Cornelius "Neil" Dufallo, whom the New York Times calls one of the "new faces in music" with "technique to burn and stylish musicality to admire," has received worldwide acclaim as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and composer. He also performs with Ne(x)tworks, a composer-performer collective; Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Chamber Players; and Butch Morris' New York Skyscraper.

Mary Rowell (violin) is Concertmaster of the Radio City Orchestra and the Palm Beach Pops. She is frequently featured as electric violin soloist with the New York City Ballet. A member of the Grammy Award-winning Tango Project, she has collaborated with Sheryl Crow, Joe Jackson and Clem Snide. She is a founding member of the alt-rock band the Silos.

Their debut album Ethel was released in 2003 by Cantaloupe Music.
